These Are the Fridge Staples That Mario Can’t Live Without
In 2018, Mario began a resurgence of sorts. He released his fifth studio album, Dancing Shadows, the first under his own imprint and a more personal musical project than previous works. Just before then, he had also crossed from music into film and TV (Step Up, Empire, Dancing with the Stars).
Now 31, Mario, the early 2000s’ R&B sensation who broke out when he was 18, is practicing reinvention once again—starting with his body. Men’s Health recently caught up with Baltimore-born artist at his home in Los Angeles where he showed us his new approach to food and fitness.
“I would consider myself a pescatarian [now],” he explained. “I pretty much stick to fish, vegetables, and fruits.”
Before he made the change, though, Mario was full omnivore, eating red meats and fast food fish. “Fish filet from McDonald’s—that used to be my go-to. But those days are over. No more dark nights.”
Now it’s all mixed fruit and liquids crowding his fridge. (He admits he’ll order in more than once in a while, so his fridge isn’t super stocked.)
What Mario does have are the essentials: coconut water, almond milk, hot salsa—as hot as you can get—and good belly probiotics. “If you don’t see this in my fridge, I’m having a bad week, for sure,” he said half-jokingly.
Even though Mario’s making most of his muscle in the kitchen, he still tries to get in three to four weekly gym sessions: legs Monday, chest Wednesday, back Friday, and then everything on Saturday.
He said the workouts keep him balanced—even if his trainer runs him hard. “He kicks my ass,” he said. “I’m actually happy he wasn’t here for this video, because he would have probably embarrassed me.”
