You don’t get the nickname “Cheetah” without good reason. In a video outlining his lockdown fitness regime, Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill demonstrated how he trains to keep up that famous speed.
Joined by his family for a workout in quarantine, Hill starts off the workout with intense cardio. He challenges his daughter to keep up with him on a series of “tempo runs” (also known as a lactate threshold run). A tempo run is essentially a sprint which pushes the body to its limits, improves the body’s ability to use lactate, and can help you run faster.
Hill does 10 rounds of this, but starts off by saying he’ll only do eight — this, he explains, is a Chiefs thing. “You know, as a receiver, you’ve got to do extra,” he says. “If you’ve got 10 sprints, if your coach gave you 10 sprints, you’ve got to do two more. “
He keeps the intensity going when they move indoors for a set of weighted walking lunges, some explosive squat jumps, goblet squats (on a balance board), a 1-minute wall sit, and some jumping jack finishers.
Hill revealed last month that he’s been “taking a different approach” to his offseason training this year.
“I’m doing yoga two times a week, so I’m getting into yoga a lot,” he said. “I’ve been trying to open up my hips a little more, open up my glutes and things like that. I have been feeling amazing, been getting out of routes even better. It’s going to be crazy.”
He’s also become a proponent of Nordic hamstring curls (which are most definitely not for beginners), challenging his fellow pro athletes to put their own lower body strength to the test with the famously tough move.
